Yoni is the Sanskrit word for all the female organs combined: vagina, womb, vulva. Though it is not just a word or synonym; it literally refers to your female organs as a sacred temple. Yoni.
Yoni steaming is a very ancient healing practice that offers you an opportunity to reconnect with your body and utilise the wisdom of plant medicine to heal your cycle and physical imbalances. It is a powerful healing ritual that will allow you to heal, enjoy, open and awaken your intuition and deep inner connection.
It’s important to understand that Yoni steaming is not for cleaning your vulva or vagina. Your vagina is inherently self-cleaning.

Which herbs to choose
From the heart I share with you some of my favourite herbs for Yoni steaming. I really wish to inspire you to choose intuitively what you need for your personal ritual. It helps to know a little bit about the healing properties of some of these herbs, but the choice needs to be made from your inner feeling as opposed to the “thought out choice”. Place your hand on your womb and feel which herbs you need in this moment.
- Mugwort: Fights infection through its antibiotic and anti-fungal properties, balances female hormones and stimulates the production of hormones that help to maintain uterine health. Protects the uterus from abnormalities such as ulcers and tumors. Helps to stimulate menstrual discharge and ease cramping.
- Rosemary: An aromatic and antimicrobial herb, rosemary treats bacterial infection, speeds wound healing, and stimulates menstruation.
- Yarrow: Astringent, toning and cleansing, yarrow is great for regulating menstrual flow, treating ovarian cysts and supporting overall uterine health.
- Partridge berry: Revered as a wonderful herb for the female reproductive system, partridge berry treats infertility, regulates menstrual cycles and helps decrease severe menstrual pain.
- Motherwort: Astringent, toning and cleansing, motherwort strengthens and relaxes uterine muscles, eases uterine cramping, and may help treat uterine fibroids. Motherwort also stimulates uterine tone.
- Lavender: One of the most relaxing herbs we have, lavender is antimicrobial, supports healing, and also promotes menstrual flow.

The ritual step-by-step
STEP 1: Intention
Collect your medicinal herbs and flowers with a clear intention. Although the plants will always benefit you on a physical and hormonal level – you are free to include intentions of spiritual and emotional essence. Be clear about what you wish to release from your womb, and what you wish to invite into your life after this clearing has taken place. Call in the healing and nourishment your feminine body needs. Set your intention out loud.
STEP 2: Preparing the herbs
For the amount I recommend going with your intuition. For a relative guide you can use, 1 liter of water with 150 to 300 grams of herbs. Place the herbs into a large pot and cover them with lukewarm water. Let the water simmer (not boil) for about 20 minutes. Make sure the pot is covered at all times. This will make sure that the initial vapour cycles back into the pot and doesn’t get lost. The vapour carries the medicinal particles of the herbs. Once the 20 minutes have passed, you are free to take the lid from the pot to let the water and vapour cool down to a temperature that is doable. The skin around your Yoni is super sensitive, so be careful with the hot steam.
STEP 3: Drink the tea
Before you get ready to sit on your pot, take out a little bit of the herbal juice and put it in a cup or glass. It is highly beneficial to drink a little bit of the medicine orally. All the herbs you choose hold great value to your wellbeing, and will have double effect when you work from both sides. Also, your Yoni and your mouth are directly connected. Anatomically it is actually very visible – the jaw and the pelvis, the vagina and the throat. The more open your mouth is during making love, the more pleasure you are able to receive. The more open you are verbally in expressing yourself, the more freely your sexual energy will flow too. It is very fascinating to see the connection, and to work with it consciously. So don’t forget to take a little sip of your brew!
STEP 4: Creating sacred space
Take a moment to set up the space with attention, care and love. Make sure you can sit in silence without being disturbed. As this is a very intimate ritual, I suggest doing it at night, by candle light, just before going to bed. A Yoni steam is deeply relaxing and will ease you into a very quiet state. Once you have set up the room with candles and perhaps some soft music – take a moment to sit in front of the pot with steaming herbs. Place your hands onto your Womb, and connect to the herbs by reciting your intentions out loud. This ritual is one of slowing down, being present, and directing your power through the guidance of your words. Paying attention to the tiniest details, will assist the profound healing that can take place through Yoni steaming.
STEP 5: Get super comfortable
Cover the edge of the pot with a soft scarf, so that you are not leaning on the edges of your pot. Make sure you place the pot on something soft so that your knees are comfortable. A sheepskin is great or even a small matras or stack of pillows. You really wanna make sure you are comfortable as you will be sitting for 20 minutes minimum. Get creative about your position. Once you are set up, and the temperature of the steam is pleasant, you can sit on the pot and cover the bottom of your body with a towel. This is to prevent the steam from escaping. It is important that the steam only goes to the two lowest chakras. So tie the towel below your navel. From this position you may relax, enjoy and sink deep into your feminine organs. 20 – 30 minutes is recommended for the full effect of the herbs to take place.
STEP 6: Deeply connect & breathe
Now invite the steam to enter your body. Take your time, take it slow, and allow your mind to empty. Focus completely on your experience and your breathing. Listen closely to what’s happening inside of you, what guidance or messages might come up. As you breathe, imagine you are breathing from your Yoni mouth. Keep your focus as much as possible on your lowest two chakras. This is where all the magic is happening during this ritual. Everything your body is telling you in this moment can be seen as pure wisdom. Allow yourself to tap into this feeling of receiving.
STEP 7: Closing the ritual
After about 20-30 minutes, the herbs exhaust their medicinal properties and the ritual is complete. Place your hands on your heart and womb and notice if anything is happening there. Rest and nurture yourself afterwards, stay warm, drink some herbal tea and move slowly. The next day, whenever you find a moment, donate the herbs to nature. Not to the compost, neither to the trash. Simply place them on the Earth, giving thanks for the medicine you have received and what you have released during your steam. Ask the Earth to receive it and transform it into new fresh energy.
Avoid Yoni steaming if
- You are pregnant or think you may be pregnant
- You are menstruating
- If you have an IUD or another contraceptive device in place
- Have a vaginal infection or open wounds
Additional information on healing
Heat is medicine for the feminine body. Where cold causes contraction, heat supports opening and release. The moist heat softens the womb and the tissues, increases vital blood flow and supports your womb in releasing any stagnant blood that may have built up.
For a pleasurable moontime and easing menstrual pain, imbalances and blood clots: Setting aside time for 1-3 Yoni Steam Rituals during your pre-menstrual phase are one of the best ways to prepare for your moontime / bleeding phase and nurture pelvic stagnancy and blood clots. The warming steam aids in cleansing and nourishing the uterine membrane. It’s important to know that healthy menstrual blood flows easily, in a bright red color with no clots.
For fertility: Yoni Steams are a great support in nourishing our feminine bodies into their natural state of fertility and creativity. It helps to create uterine membranes that are moist and receptive for conception to happen. If you are actively trying to conceive, you can use the Yoni Steam during your pre-ovulation phase up until ovulation, to prepare for conception. Do not steam after possible conception.
After miscarriage: During the vulnerable time following a miscarriage, a Yoni Steam Ritual may support your body in cleansing and can also be a wonderful tool for connecting with your feminine center and Inner Woman to avoid stagnant emotions taking root in your body. You can begin to Yoni Steam once your bleeding has ceased. It is important to take the time to honor the initiation of this experience and actively support the energetic and physical release.
Postpartum: Keeping women warm is at the heart of many women’s wisdom practices across the world, including traditional postpartum practices. Using Yoni Steams after birth brings nourishing heat, supports the body to release fluids, and aids the womb in shrinking back to pre-pregnancy size. If you have had a caesarian you want to wait a little longer than vaginal birth, until you’ve healed well.
Peri-menopause and menopause: When your cycles are slowing down or changing, the Yoni Steam can stimulate circulation and support your womb to continue to release fully. On the other side of menopause, the warming steam can be revitalizing for vaginal dryness while nourishing a deep connection to your feminine center and Inner Woman in a time of initiation and transformation.
Pelvic pain, tightness or pain during intercourse: For women experiencing pelvic pain, chronic holding, or tightness the Yoni Steam helps to soothe and relax the pelvic muscles. Combine the steam with breath awareness and full diaphragmatic breathing to relax your pelvic muscles and create a loving connection with your feminine center.
After Hysterectomy or other pelvic surgeries: The heat and warmth can be a soothing therapy for scar tissue.
